Message from John

The God of Second Chances
Have you ever felt like you really messed things up big-time? Or maybe as you have grown in your faith and maturity you just wish you had a second shot at something. I have good news for you! You can start over! You can have a second chance at things! I believe we serve a God of Second Chances.
What does it mean to have a second chance? How do we access these new opportunities? What are some responsibilities we face as we are given “second chances?” In the lesson today we want to look at some the most wonderful aspects of serving a “God of Second Chances?” I will incorporate Biblical principals into my presentation of my “second chance” to preach the Gospel to people of Micronesia. I believe the lessons I hope to share are of benefit to all. Do you need a second chance? A “do-over?” Follow along and fill in the blanks as we consider God given “second chances in life”.

News and Such

Bible Bowl Fundraiser Cancelled
Only two of the Bible Bowlers plan to travel to Tulsa in March and due to the small number, the chili supper fund raiser planned for Feb. 5 has been cancelled. – Sheila Yeager

Peer Counseling Change
Our church leaders want you to know that our peer counseling and marriage mentoring ministries are active, ready and willing to minister to you and your family's needs. The new number to call if you have a need is: 779-0691. All counseling is free and completely confidential. If you are interested in taking the Soul Care 101 class and joining our ministry team as a peer counselor then let Diane Hatfield know.

What An Opportunity!
If you would like to plan, plant, water, weed, pick a community garden site here on God’s property—attend a planning meeting in Room 103 right after classes on Sunday January 31st.

Haitian Relief
Thanks to your generous, caring, compassionate hearts, the “Special Contribution” for Haiti was $5,785.00. The funds will go to the Sunset Haitian Relief Fund in Lubbock, Texas to be used to help church members who are in need. There were at least 10 brothers and sisters that died in the quake. Secondly, the funds will be used to help with other’s needs (food, water, clothing, shelter) and lastly, the funds will be used for follow-up and helping with spiritual needs. Teams are being sent to Cap-Haitien, a large city in Haiti where there is a church and school of preaching. Refugees have started to arrive there.

Lights Out!
Various groups are assigned to turn lights out and lock up after each service, however, sometimes they forget and the building has been left open overnight. If you are the last one in the building after a service , please turn out lights and lock all doors.

Homeless Meal
Tomorrow, (February 1) is our turn to prepare and serve the homeless evening meal at the shelter on North Ave. The lasagna trays are in the foyer for those who prepare the food and servers should be at the shelter by 5:30 PM tomorrow evening.

Tax Season
The contribution records for 2009 have been sent out to the individuals that get them automatically, however, if anyone did not get one and would like to have it for your income tax preparation, let the office know and we will get it to you. I have just been told that if you contributed to the Haitian Relief Fund, that contribution can also be claimed on your 2009 return.

Agape Sunday
Today we are having our Agape meal right after morning services. We encourage everyone to stay and enjoy the fellowship and wonderful food. We extend a very special invitation to our visitors to join us.

Mary Clayton Stranded in Peru
Mary, Doug & Ann’s daughter, and her friend Erin stopped in Machu Picchu, Peru to hike around some ruins for a few days on their way back to studying abroad in Argentina. Over the weekend a storm dumped heavy rain in the region and caused flooding and road and rail bridges to be washed away from the little mountain village and they are stranded there with about a 1000 other international tourists trying to get out. Food and water are being dropped in and the locals are not very happy about the tourists, especially the Americans getting out first.  Hopefully they will be on their way back to Buenos Aires as you read this but please keep them in your prayers that they may be evacuated soon.

UPDATE:
Heard from Mary tonight. She is still in Aguas Calientes/Machu Picchu in her hostel. Rain prohibited most evacuations today and a power outage kept her from sending me a message. There remain about 1500 people that need to be evacuated and they are taking them oldest to youngest, with no preference to Americans, which seems to have settled the angry mob issue somewhat.. If the weather is good (which it is not) they hope to get 500 out per day. So, Mary is likely stranded for another 3 days minimum as she is one of the youngest adults. She seems to be doing well and taking it in stride despite the frustrating and potentially dangerous situations that exist daily. I have asked her about food and water, etc and hope to hear back with a positive answer soon... Thanks for your prayers and concerns. Doug

Prayer Needs

.

Give thanks for John Cooper's safety on his mission trip to Micronesia and Guam. Pray for all those he came in contact with to continue their good work, and for those who have been searching for the LORD that John was able to minister to while traveling.

Pray for families who have lost loved ones - Bill Antico, the Axtells, Johnny Terry's family, the Rettigs, Rebecca Parks,  Stephanie Yeager, Vicky Downey, and Sue Boyle as they are still grieving from loss.

Allen Avery had to be put back on the ventilator last weekend which has been disappointing. We don't know yet what the outcome will be.  One good thing that happened the same day was that the doctor told them that another CT scan had been done of the brain and that there wasn't any sign on it of a mass in the brain.  Pray that his body will be able to release the CO2 gasses, that Allen will be able to move to the next step of rehab. Please pray for wisdom and strength for Janelle and the family.

Pray for Kay Wilson's father, Sam Burke (Lives in Oklahoma) - his health is failing.

Jane Miller (daughter of Wylie and Margie) has kidney cancer - pray that the LORD will give her health care providers wisdom in knowing the right treatments best for them and for relief from pain.

Pray for Henry Higgins and comfort and for him and Oneita as they adjust to assisted living.

Kitt Woods has a severe kidney infection and needs prayers for recovery.

Terry Meridith had joint replacement surgery and is in therapy.

Jessica Boone (16 year old with severe head injury)  Jessie has been scheduled for her 2nd surgery to replace the other half of her skull on February 22nd. This is a couple of months earlier than expected. Give praise to God for orchestrating and taking care of all the details of
Jessie's needs. Continue to ask God for His wisdom, guidance, and direction for her care.

Timothy Karcher sustained serious injuries while proudly serving his country in Iraq.  He was recently able to meet many soldiers and friends coming home. "I would ask that each of you continue to keep these Soldiers and their families in your prayers, because what the Army calls reintegration (the Soldier reintegrating with society, family, etc.) can be a challenging time."  Give thanks for this good man's great attitude and pray it will continue through the long road ahead.

THANKSGIVING .. Thank You Heavenly Father for all answered prayers. We know all good things come from You, and You do hear us and respond.
