Message from John

 What Disturbs You?
Acts 17:16 says, “While Paul was …in Athens, he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full of idols.” The phrase “he was greatly distressed” in the NIV is translated differently in the various versions: KJV- “his spirit was stirred in him”, TEV- “he was greatly upset”, JB- “his whole soul was revolted”, RSV- “his spirit was provoked within him”, NEB- “he was exasperated”. These all say basically the same thing- Paul was greatly disturbed.
What disturbs you? Maybe it is when things don’t go smoothly, someone is late, something doesn’t work, or someone messes things up. In the church people can get disturbed if their favorite songs aren’t sung, or if someone else’s favorite songs are sung; maybe they are sung too loud, or too low, too fast or too slow. The sermon is too long or not ex citing enough, the seats are too soft or too hard. All kinds of things can disturb us.
What disturbs us may say something about us. Do we get disturbed at little things that shouldn’t really matter? Or do we see people around us worship ping the idols of our modern culture and it really bothers us? Or do we find ourselves worshipping these same idols and it disturbs us. Are we jealous for the true God. It really does bother me to see so many people worshipping (giving their lives for things) that don’t really deserve that place or priority. And it really does bother me when I find myself being influenced by the idols and values of our culture.
Let us be people that get upset at the big things: The things that can negatively affect our spiritual health and our eternal destiny and that of our fellow human beings. Let us speak out, as Paul did, about the false gods of our time. Jesus alone offers us real forgiveness, lasting peace and the promise of eternal life through His resurrection.
Sold on Jesus,
John Cooper
