Message from John

The Magic Kingdom?
Last week Holly and I attended a family reunion of sorts in Orlando, Florida. It was really a gathering to celebrate my parents 60th wedding anniversary. Orlando, as you know, is the home of several amusement theme parks. The largest of them all is no doubt Disney World. Actually Disney has several different parks with “The Magic Kingdom” being the most popular. Since my younger brother has a twelve year old daughter we accompanied them one day on their visit to the “The Magic Kingdom”. Prior to the fireworks that night Jimminey Cricket shared some thoughts that focused on the idea that “dreams really do come true.”
On another day of our vacation we visited Orlando’s Sea World. The theme of Sea World, as displayed on banners and presented in some of their programs is, “believe!” Both of these concepts, “dreams really do come true” and “believe!” are wonderful. Since it was Spring Break for many East Coast school districts there were multitudes joining us in this experience. Were these hordes of people really there to have their “dreams come true” or to find something to “believe” in? These slogans left me wondering, “HOW do dreams really come true?” and what ought I to “believe IN?”
Now I know that there were many people of faith there who were there just for a good time. Probably most of us were not there looking for a life changing spiritual experience. But might there be many who thought they could find some real lasting joy, meaning and hope in these parks?... Some who believe that make believe cartoon characters or trained dolphins and whales might show us the way to true happiness and understanding of life?
In Acts 8 we find people looking to a bogus source for direction and hope. “…there was a man named Simon who had previously practiced magic in the city and amazed the nation of Samaria, saying that he himself was someone great.”…”They followed him because he had amazed them for a log time with his magic. But when they believed Philip as he preached the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women” (Acts 8:9,11,12). Philip preached truth and did not trick or deceive people. Have we sometimes been tricked by man-made philosophies, fun filled offerings, and magic cures? Jesus alone has the power to save. God’s Kingdom is the only one that will stand in the end. There is no real magic in man-made kingdoms, whatever they may promise.

In His Kingdom,
