Mission to Dubai (April 20 – May 3, 2010)- John Cooper
About a year ago a man named Philip Ganta from Dubai contacted me because of our church website. He told me a little about his efforts to preach the gospel in the Middle East. I have had a great desire to help stem the spread of Islam and this man was and is doing just that. He came to raise support for his work last summer. Holly and I met him and Michael O’Leary (Stateside sponsor of this work- phone # 785-532-8309) in Denver in August of 2009. I showed him my powerpoint presentations on “Archaeology and the Bible”, “The Historicity and Divinity of Jesus” and “The Existence of God”. He was very impressed and asked me to consider coming and presenting these lessons to his preachers training schools in Dubai and India. When he told me it would cost around $5,000 to do this I did not think I could come up with that kind of money. Thus I forgot about Dubai as a mission work possibility.
However, God works in mysterious ways. After my recent mission trip to Pohnpei and Guam (January 10-24) I sent a report out to several friends. One called back and stated that he wanted to support my mission efforts to a maximum of $5,000.
per year. He also indicated that he would like to challenge others to match that amount.
The very next morning, Wednesday, February 17, I got a call from Philip Ganta from Dubai. They are going to have their fifth year anniversary of the Dubai church of Christ and he wanted me to be their main speaker. Furthermore, he wanted me to speak to the preacher training school in Dubai and another one he directs in India.
Of course I asked for details and an estimate of the costs. Let me share this information with you. My airfare from Grand Junction, CO to Dubai is $1,559.00, 6 nights hotel in Dubai- $410, Dubai classes- $4,150. - They must rent rooms in “safe” sections in the city and pay the church of England for this right. It would otherwise be illegal to preach Christianity in this Islamic state. This amount also covers food for those who attend the evening lectures as well as their transportation to the meetings. Those who attend are all foreigners. They are workers from India, Bangladesh, Iran, Pakistan and many more Middle Eastern countries. They are here to build all the huge buildings in Dubai. Most are away from their families, live in minimal housing and make only about $ 250. per month. This is one reason I cannot stay with any of them, they do not have their own homes there.
In India I will stay with Philip Ganta in his home. While there he is organizing an area wide evangelistic campaign in which they expect to have 2,000 people in attendance. They also feed those who attend. This cost is expected to be around $1,500. The airfare from Dubai to India is $490 per person and I need to pay for Philip’s airfare as well, thus another $980. With my Indian visa fees and other expenses it looks like the total cost could approach $9,000. I know this is a lot but when we consider the number of people reached and the locality of this effort, in the heart of the Islamic world, it seems a Godsend.
Please pray about this opportunity. I am willing to go, but I need to be sent (Romans 10:14,15) I can give you many more details so call if you have questions.
Thank you and may God lead you to give generously if you are able.

p.s.- Since I made this announcement last Sunday $3,000. was given. With the matching funds that amounts to $6,000. Wow! Praise God! Thank you! We are getting there!!

Prayer Needs

Continue to pray for families who have lost loved ones and are still grieving from loss.

Pray for all those who are continuing to need employment to support their families.  Pray for God's grace to lead them to where he wants them to be, and can best utilize their talents to represent Him wherever He chooses.

Pray for Bryce and Jeannette Sanburg's granddaughter, who has been having severe back pain and undergoing tests to find the cause.

Diane Hatfield, Steve Neff, George Henderson and Betsey Brown - are healing from recent surgeries - continue to pray for their complete recovery.

Marian Tidwell (Brother of Bill Tidwell) recently underwent 2 open heart surgeries. He is improving rapidly. Please keep him in your prayers for a speedy, complete recovery.

Mike Bamford (has cystic fibrosis and leukemia) - is in Children's Hospital in Denver.  Mike is having neuropathic pain that is easily set off by the slightest touch. The doctors can't do too much more than medicate.   A pain team is coming to see if there are other solutions.  Mike has had fevers the last few days.  Pray specifically for this pain and the fever to end. Please keep up the prayers for Mike and his family.

Allen Avery - Janelle and Allen are now in Houston.  Praise God for going before them in the move to Houston. And praise God for those who are ministering God's grace to them each day. "Your prayers and encouragement is an important part of this walk. God uses you each day and we pray He will add to your blessings for the help you have been to us. So thank you!"

Pray for the staff of the Regional Center, some of whom are losing jobs or having to move into different positions because of state budget cutbacks.

Jessica Boone (16 year old with severe head injury) had her 2nd surgery to replace the other half of her skull on February 22nd. "Her 3D CT scan of the previous surgery shows it has healed 97-99%. The surgeons were very pleased with how this surgery went.  Pray for controlled swelling, irritation of brain to settle down, no cerebral spinal fluid leaks, rest and pain control, sodium levels to go down, no more vomiting.....thank you for your prayers."

Timothy Karcher sustained serious injuries while proudly serving his country in Iraq.  " I had my stitches removed 2/22, an the doctors were happy with my progress.  It looks as though my right leg has healed well from the surgery almost three weeks ago.  Our next step will be to recast my legs, and develop some new prosthetics.  I plan tomorrow to visit the young (wounded) Soldier that I mentioned in last week's posting.   I really hope that his morale may have improved, or that I can help him gain a positive attitude.  I appreciate all of you who are keeping him in your prayers.  He needs to find hope, and in my experience hope comes from trusting in the Lord.  I pray that I can find the right words (through the Holy Spirit) to instill that hope in him. I do not know if this young man knows God, but I pray that he can find Him, and learn to trust Him.  I'd ask all of you to pray for this young Soldier."  Pray for Tim to continue his amazing and thankful attitude to be able to encourage other returning wounded soldiers.

THANKSGIVING ... Thank You Heavenly Father for all answered prayers. We know all good things come from You, and You do hear our prayers and answer them.
