Our Ministries

BENEVOLENCE MINISTRY

Jesus spoke of the importance of meeting not only the spiritual but also the physical needs of those around us (Matt. 25:31-46) and the apostles made sure that those in need within the church were helped (Acts 6:1-7).  Today we must be certain that we do the same.  Even in an affluent country such as ours, the needs are great.  The benevolence efforts of this church are a critical part of our work.  As faith without works is dead, benevolence shows that we really do care about others rather than just saying so.  There are many opportunities, both great and small, that are wonderful opportunities for involvement for adults and young people.

BIG BROTHER & BIG SISTER MINISTRY

Unfortunately not all families function as God would have them.  There are divorces and broken homes.  Sometimes death can take a parent unexpectedly.  People involved in these situations need help.  We are wanting to help children who don’t have a two parent home by providing Godly Christian role models.  “Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and endurance.  Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good.  Then they can train the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God. (Titus 2:2-5)  You can be a big brother or big sister to a young person in need.

BUDGET AND FINANCE MINISTRY

God has blessed us richly with material goods.  He expects us to share our blessings with others and to help in spreading the good news of Jesus Christ locally and universally.
This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of God’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.  (2 Cor. 9:12)
The overall responsibility of the Finance Ministry is to operate the functions of the church within the income received for any calendar year, with no deficit spending.  Finance also works with various ministries and elders in developing and approving an annual budget, provide the congregation with regular financial reports and maintain special money market accounts to meet needs for emergencies; planned long-range maintenance and improvements that benefit the building and grounds.

 BUILDING AND GROUNDS MINISTRY

God has blessed us with a wonderful place to meet.  May we be good stewards of this tool.  Though in the Old Testament the temple played a different role than our meeting place may now, surely God still wants us to care for what He has blessed us with.
This is what the Lord Almighty says:  “Give careful thought to your ways.  Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build the house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored,” says the Lord.  “You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little.  What you brought home, I blew away. Why?” declares the Lord Almighty.  “Because of my house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with his own house.” (Haggai 1:7-9)

CHILDREN’S BIBLE HOUR

On Sunday mornings during the “worship hour” in the auditorium, we also provide a place for our children (age 3 through grade 3) to participate in a worship time on their own level.  Volunteers help these children to grow in their knowledge and love of God.  Materials and instruction are given to all who want to help with this great work.

  EDUCATION

Our goal is: To provide quality Christian education for the entire church family.  This will be accomplished through traditional classroom teaching, interactive small group discussions, videos, songs, and other methods that will spur us to new insights into Christian living and breed Christlike attitudes and behavior.  We have to teach God’s Word so that each disciple can be adequately and thoroughly trained to grow and mature in Christ. (Deut. 6:4-7)
“Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.” (1Pet. 2:2,3)
“But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.” (2 Pet. 3:18)

FAMILY ENRICHMENT

Families are the basic unit of society and the church.  Nurturing them and helping them be the wonderful rewarding entities that God intended them to be is the aim of this ministry.  Through making available materials, classes, seminars on families, and lifting up the God given roles and responsibilities of each family member this ministry hopes to help strengthen the individual as well as the entire church.  “What we have heard and known, what our fathers have told us.  We will not hide them from their children; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, His power, and the wonders He has done.”  (Psa. 78:3,4)

FELLOWSHIP

“What a fellowship what a joy divine” So goes one of the songs we sing.  By “leaning on the everlasting arms” of Jesus we get great strength and encouragement.  God works through us and by leaning on each other we survive and grow.  The fellowship ministry provides opportunities for us to get together and to get to know each other.  It is a time of sharing of ourselves with each other.  The Greek word for fellowship is “Koinonia” and means “sharing.”  It is not just a social activity but a spiritual bonding of our lives and our love.  “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” (Acts 2:42)

GREETERS MINISTRY

We are blessed with many visitors at our services.  We want them to feel welcome, important and have an immediate sense of belonging (James2:1-5).  This  can be accomplished by putting the words of Jesus into practice “Do to others as you would have them do to you”  (Luke 6:31)  We attempt to greet everyone and give them a packet of information concerning who we are and what we are about as the Lord’s church.  We mail out a letter to all our visitors and they also receive a visit and a loaf of bread as a token of our appreciation and love.  We can all make our visitors welcome.

INTERNET MINISTRY

The internet web site was started in 2004 to help those who left for college, moved away or just want to stay informed about the church in Grand Junction.   It also reaches those in faraway places such as Togo, South Africa and other world countries.  This outreach has reached people worldwide.  In 2006 there were 700,000 hits from 54 countries.

JAIL MINISTRY

“I was in prison and you visited me” is one of the things Jesus said to the faithful in the great judgment scene (Mt 25).  People make mistakes and some are caught and locked up.  Some of these individuals are humbled and are open to their need of Jesus.  We want to reach out to people in need.

LADIES MINISTRY

So many of our women are doing so many wonderful things for the Lord.  They are true servants of Jesus, just like the women among the early disciples.  Although our women are involved in our other ministry areas they also have some areas of their own.  Each Fall the women plan a ladies retreat to uplift and bond together Christian women of our congregation.  Below are some areas of opportunity for women.

LOCAL EVANGELISM

One of our primary goals as the church of Christ is to share the “good news” of Jesus Christ with the people of our city and the surrounding communities.  Jesus said, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.” (Luke 4:44)  Evangelism, sharing and living the “good news”, is ultimately the goal of all our ministries.  The local evangelism ministry has the responsibility of planning and implementing special outreach efforts.  There is something for everyone to do!  That’s why we are all here.

MISSIONS MINISTRY

Jesus said Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.” (Mark 16:15)  We have the responsibility, the privilege, of seeing that the gospel is preached throughout the world.  We are helping support Scott & Lisa Harris in South Africa, Marty & Louise Koonce in Togo, and Sascha & Jennifer Terry in Brazil. We are involved in helping the church in Catherineburg, Russia.  Also, groups have gone from here on medical mission trips to Honduras under the leadership of Dr. Craig Spoering. And we are helping with Jovenes de Camino Street Children’s Project in Honduras. In addition to the above we are helping with the support of Ron Pottberg in Austin, Texas as he works full time with World Bible School.  There is also interest in helping smaller churches in Western Colorado to grow.

MOVING MINISTRY

We are a mobile society.  We move our stuff here and there.  Since most of us have so much stuff, we usually need help moving it.  This is a great way to help others in a sometimes challenging way.

NEW MEMBERS/INVOLVEMENT

We want all of our new members to know immediately that they are wanted, loved, and needed.  We want to make sure they are visited soon after they place membership and are given opportunities to use their talents in God’s service.  It is often difficult and challenging to be new.  It is easy to be lonely and feel overwhelmed by all the new faces.  The New Members ministry is an effort to help these new people realize how loved and needed they are.  “I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me faithful, appointing me to his service. (1 Tim. 1:12)

PRAYER MINISTRY

One of the characteristics of the early church is that it was a praying church.  This church believes in prayer.  We want to do all we can to make prayer a powerful part of our lives individually and as a church.  This ministry attempts to keep the practice of prayer vital and ever growing.

QUILTING MINISTRY

In Acts chapter 9 we find a lady named Dorcas who, during her lifetime had made robes and clothing for many in need. We have a similar ministry where quilts are made and sent to people in need. We’ve sent quilts to places where people have lost their homes in hurricanes, floods and fires. We’ve sent them to those who were ill or dying. They’ve warmed the bodies and souls and lifted the spirits of people throughout the world. This group meets at the building the second and fourth Tuesday of each month.

SINGLES/COLLEGE AGE

We want to meet people’s needs at every stage of their lives because Jesus does.  We are attempting to reach out to Mesa College students and have an on campus Bible fellowship time there.  When they are here we want them to feel wanted and at home.  We also want our single members to be involved and feel wanted and needed as they really are.  We also want to help those who have experienced the trauma of divorce.  Jesus said “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For My yoke is easy and My burden is light. WIDOWS/WIDOWERS

Just how important this ministry area is, is shown in James 1:27 “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”  We have many widow/widowers in our congregation.  They are a blessing to us.  Their situations are sometimes difficult and lonely.  We can truly serve them by helping and encouraging them in every way possible.  Let us rise to meet the needs of this wonderful group of Christian people.

WORSHIP

One of the reasons we meet together is to praise God.  We remember the great gift of His Son for our salvation.  Another reason for our meeting is to learn more of His will for us.  “On the first day of the week we came together to break bread.  Paul spoke to the people and because he intended to leave the next day, kept on talking until midnight.” (Acts 20:7)  Another is to encourage one another.  (Heb 10:24, 25)  The worship ministry is responsible for attempting to have us accomplish these, as well as other goals in our public assemblies.  May these times together be uplifting, educational and full of praise for God.

YOUTH

Our Youth are one of our greatest assets.  Jesus had time for young people even though some of the disciples didn’t think he should. (Mt. 19:13-15)  We also need to take time for our children.  Young people are a priority with us. The most effective youth ministers are you, the parents of kids raising them to love the Lord.
